Pastor Alexander G. Houston

A pastor and preacher committed to justice, empowerment, and faith, Dr. Houston has pursued his pastoral calling with vigor, discipline, and an abiding commitment. As Senior Pastor of The Christian Church in Philadelphia in Philadelphia, PA, Dr. Houston has dedicated his ministerial life to proclaiming a message of power, love, and salvation for all who are in need of the grace of God.

A native of Trevose, Pennsylvania, Dr. Houston is a 2001 graduate of Colgate University where he excelled as a student athlete and pursued a dual major in Philosophy and Religion. In 2009, he earned the Master of Divinity degree from Palmer Theological Seminary and was awarded a Doctor of Ministry from Drew Theological Seminary in 2015 where he focused his study on homiletics as it pertained to effective ministry with the “millennial generation.” A life-long learner, he has continued to pursue additional educational opportunities and has completed fellowships at Princeton Theological Seminary, Wesley Theological Seminary, and The Center for Progressive Leadership.

With a unique gift to communicate across generations, Dr. Houston’s creative Bible-based messages have inspired young and old alike. His intergenerational preaching gift has made Dr. Houston a popular speaker at churches, retreats, and schools across the eastern seaboard. He is highly influenced by the works of Dr. Gardner C. Taylor, Dr. Ronald J. Sider, Dr. Obery Hendricks, Dr. Samuel D. Proctor, and in addition, the work and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Moreover, his father, Pastor Gordon S. Houston, Sr., has been a primary mentor during his spiritual formation.

In 2009, he embarked on a burgeoning career in higher education and served as the Director of Admissions of Palmer Theological Seminary of Eastern University. Over the next three years, Dr. Houston continually proved to be a vital cog in the advancement of the Palmer mission, “The Whole Gospel, for The Whole World, Through Whole Persons”, providing leadership in both of the Admissions Office and as Director of Seminary Advancement.

From 2011-2015, Dr. Houston served as the 33rd pastor in the 325-year history of Cohansey Baptist Church of Roadstown in Bridgeton, New Jersey. During his five-year tenure, Cohansey experienced a new birth and revival. Additionally, as the first African-American pastor in the history of the congregation, he was keenly aware of the groundbreaking appointment which God afforded him.

Dr. Houston was licensed to the gospel ministry in 2007 and ordained in 2009 at The Christian Church in Philadelphia. In 2009, his ordination was recognized by the American Baptist Churches USA.

He is married to his lovely wife, the former Erika N. Williams of Memphis, Tennessee. Mrs. Houston is a graduate of Clark-Atlanta University and member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. They are the proud parents of two beautiful daughters, Alana Michelle and Ava Nicole.
